*Lágrimas Silenciosas (Silent Tears)* was composed for and dedicated to solo pianist Connie and violin virtuoso Patricia Shih, whose artistic partnership began in early childhood and developed into a later distinguished international career as a sister duo. “Lágrimas Silenciosas” forms the third movement of the four-movement Violin Sonata entitled *The Rhythm of Time,* which was inspired by the sensitive musicality and dynamic energy of these two extraordinary musicians.

*Lágrimas Silenciosas* is built upon two primary stylistic frameworks. The first derives from Afro-Cuban rhythmic structures characteristic of *Rumba Guaguancó*. The pianist’s left and right hands emulate the interplay of the drum and clave patterns of this style, though at a significantly reduced tempo. This tempo and instrumental adaptation transforms the original propulsive percussion idiom into a slow, sensual rhythmic dance, producing a nuanced, syncopated pulse that can recall the expressive world of tango and flamenco.

The second structural foundation lies in the use of the Andalusian cadence, a harmonic progression common to both flamenco and Cuban idioms. This iconic descending Phrygian mode sequence is further treated with harmonic extensions and chromatic inflections that evoke associations with jazz harmony but which are also concordant with the broader harmonic practices of twentieth and twenty-first-century Western music. This integration of rhythmic and harmonic elements results in a composite idiom that situates the work at the intersection of Western classical, Spanish, and Cuban musical traditions.

Expressively, *Lágrimas Silenciosas* engages with suppressed emotion—internalized pain, solitude, and nostalgia underlying an outward restraint— a nostalgic yearning felt beneath a veneer of self-control— hence the “silent tears.” This sensibility aligns closely with the Brazilian or Portuguese feeling of *saudade* (a deep emotional longing that is both melancholic and haunting) to create an expression of the hidden inner life of the person revealed through the power of music and dance.
